The main landmarks of Cheltenham tend to be its period buildings and monuments to its past, with St. Mary's Church on High Street being one of the oldest and most impressive. For something completely different, the Promenade offers a pleasant place for a stroll and ranks amongst England's most beautiful thoroughfares.

Cheltenham Town Hall can be found within Imperial Square, where it is surrounded by formal lawns and gardens, and known for its graceful architecture and symbols of the city - namely the oak tree, pigeons and books. This Town Hall was completed at the turn of the 20th century and served as Assembly Rooms.

The Promenade is very much central to life in Cheltenham and this famous local landmark lies in the heart of the town centre, stretching from Montpellier Gardens, past the Imperial Gardens and towards Pittville Park. During the summer months, the Promenade is at its best, when it is adorned with colourful hanging baskets, overflowing with seasonal floral displays. Attractions along the Promenade include the Long Gardens, and also the Municipal Offices, which were actually built as long ago as 1825, as a rather grand private residence.

Cheltenham Landmarks and Monuments: Cleve Hill

Located a mere 6 km / 4 miles to the north of the town, Cleve Hill is easy to spot and at 325 metres / 1,065 feet tall, is actually the highest point in the whole of the Cotswolds and also throughout 'Lowland England'. Boasting impressive views across the Cheltenham townscape, Cleve Hill in climbed by regular buses during the week, which depart from the town centre every hour.

Cheltenham Landmarks and Monuments: St. Mary's Church

The parish church of St. Mary's is a particularly important landmark in Cheltenham, since it is the town's only remaining medieval building still standing. St. Mary's Church dates back almost 900 years and is thought to have been built on the very site of a former 8th-century Saxon church. Over the centuries, various renovations and extensions have taken place, with the Victorian alterations being especially prominent and including the addition of some fine stained-glass windows. The tall spire and bell tower is a noteworthy element of the church and dates from the early part of the 13th century.

Step inside Cheltenham Town Hall and you will find an especially elaborate interior, with Corinthian columns in the huge Main Hall, together with a dramatic coved ceiling and space for up to 1,000 people. Cheltenham Town Hall is unusual in that it operates solely as a venue for public events, and not as office space for the borough council, which is to be found in the town's neighbouring Municipal Offices.
